The Hurt of Growing Pains: Trusting God in the Middle of Becoming
There is a quiet ache that no one really prepares us for.
It isn’t the pain of staying where you are, and it isn’t quite the joy of arriving where you’re meant to be. It lives somewhere in between—in the sacred, uncomfortable space of becoming.
We often talk about transformation as though it is beautiful from beginning to end. Social media celebrates the breakthrough, the healed version of ourselves, the answered prayers, and the finished testimony. But very few people talk about what happens in the middle.
The waiting.
The stretching.
The uncertainty.
The moments when you no longer recognize the person you used to be, yet you haven’t fully become the person God is shaping you into.
That is where growing pains live.
The Quiet Ache of Transformation
Growing pains are more than emotional discomfort. They are the internal shifts that happen when God begins changing your heart, renewing your mind, and calling you into a new season.
It can feel like friendships no longer fit. Dreams begin to change. Old habits lose their grip, but new rhythms haven’t yet formed. Sometimes you wonder if you’ve lost yourself.
What if you haven’t?
What if you’re simply outgrowing the version of yourself that was never meant to carry you into your next season?
Growth often feels like loss before it feels like freedom.
That doesn’t mean something is wrong. It means something is changing.
Trusting the Transition
One of the hardest lessons in becoming is learning not to mistake discomfort for disobedience.
We often assume that if following God feels difficult, we must have taken a wrong turn.
But Scripture tells a different story. Throughout the Bible, God frequently led His people through wilderness seasons before bringing them into places of promise. The wilderness wasn’t evidence of His absence. It was where He refined, prepared, and strengthened them.
Growth pains are not a sign that you are outside of God’s will. They can be evidence that He is expanding your capacity.
The stretching you feel today may be preparing you to carry tomorrow’s calling.
Instead of asking,
“Why is this happening to me?”
perhaps begin asking,
“What is God developing within me?”
That simple shift changes everything.
- Pain becomes purpose.
- Waiting becomes preparation.
- The transition becomes holy ground.
God Is Doing Something New
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
— Isaiah 43:19
Notice that God doesn’t say the wilderness won’t exist.
He promises that He will make a way through it.
Sometimes we pray for God to remove the uncomfortable season, while He is inviting us to notice the new thing already beginning beneath the surface.
Even when progress feels invisible, He is still working.
Roots grow long before fruit appears.
A Prayer for the Middle
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for staying with me in every stage of becoming.
When growth feels painful and the future feels uncertain, remind me that You are still at work. Help me trust what I cannot yet see. Give me the courage to release old versions of myself and the faith to embrace the person You are creating me to become.
Teach me to see my growing pains not as punishment, but as preparation. Help me believe that You are making a way, even in places that still feel like wilderness.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
You Don’t Have to Walk Through This Alone
If you’re in the middle of your own season of becoming, remember:
You are not behind.
You are not forgotten.
You are not failing.
You are growing.
The wilderness feels a lot less lonely when we walk through it together.
Now I’d Love to Hear From You
What growing pain are you navigating in this season? Where have you seen God meeting you in the middle of your becoming?
