Family Didn’t Show Up — But I’m Still Standing

Family is supposed to be the safe place.
The ones who rush in when life falls apart.
The ones who check in, pray for you, bring you tea, and sit in silence when words are too heavy.

But sometimes… family is quiet.

You go through grief.
You lose someone you love.
Your world feels like it’s shattering.
And the very people you expected to lean on are nowhere to be found.

And that’s what I’ve had to sit with.

The silence.
The absence.
The disappointment.

But here’s what I’ve realized:

Just because they share your blood doesn’t mean they understand your burden.

Just because you’ve always shown up for them, doesn’t mean they know how to show up for you.

And it hurts.
But that hurt is not the end of my story.

Because while I cried alone, God was with me.
While I tried to hold it together, God was holding me.
And while family stayed silent, heaven was speaking.

I’m learning to release the expectations.
To grieve what I thought I had.
And to build boundaries out of love, not bitterness.

Family is not just DNA.
Family is who walks with you through the storm and celebrates you when you rise again.

And if that circle is smaller than you thought—it’s okay.
Because God will never leave you.
And you are still worthy of love, support, and community.

🙏 A Prayer for Family Disappointment

God, You see every tear I’ve cried over people I love.
You know the silence I’ve sat in.
The text I never got.
The call that never came.
And the pain I felt when family didn’t show up.

But I trust You to heal the places they couldn’t reach.
I release them to You.
I let go of the version of family I wanted…
and receive the peace You’re giving me now.

Surround me with real connection.
Remind me that You’re still my refuge.
And lead me to people who love me like You do.

Amen.
